2008 Ford Freedom Award Essay Contest and Community Service Awards Winners Announced

Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and The Detroit News Newspapers in Education have announced the winners of the 2008 Ford Freedom Award Essay Contest and Community Services Awards Winners for 4th through 8th grade students.

Detroit Free Press 17th Annual Writing Awards Results

More than 3,100 entries were received for the 17th annual 2008 Detroit Free Press Writing Awards. Awards of Excellence, Commendation and Honorable Mention were awarded in each category.


Yak's Corner Favorite Book Character Contest Winners

Nearly 4,000 students participated in the Yak's Corner Favorite Book Character Contest this year. Judging was held on Saturday, January 26 and winners were selected.

A FREE educational program in partnership with the Detroit Tigers that focuses on the importance of character traits like self-esteem, high motivation and self-discipline, with profiles of Tigers and tips from coaches. This program is made possible by Detroit Tigers Foundation, The Skillman Foundation, Michigan Orthopedic Services, DMC (Detroit Medical Center) and UPS. The unit includes a 16-page print student supplement, full-color classroom poster and two free deliveries of 25 or more copies of the Detroit Free Press. High-Tech Heroes: Hispanic Explorers in Science and Technology (grades 4-12)

This language arts, Science and Spanish program is sponsored by Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month - September 15-October 15. From animal and plant biology to automotive and weapons engineering, some of the greatest scientific discoveries and technological developments in recent history have been achieved by Hispanics. The program's 16-page bilingual student section has been created to help student learn about some of the most important of these contributions. This program also includes an online teacher bilingual teacher guide and a poster.
